At Caulfield RSL, located at 4 St Georges Road, Elsternwick VIC 3185, Australia, we proudly uphold the spirit of the ANZACs and the ideals of the RSL (Returned Services League). Established as a cherished institution in the heart of our community, our mission is to be the club of choice for local residents while honoring the bravery and sacrifices of our service members.
The Caulfield RSL stands on the site of the original Elsternwick Club, which was built in 1896. In 1920, the RSL acquired the building, which underwent significant renovations and expansions. It was reopened in 1938 by former Prime Minister William (Billy) Hughes. The current façade and much of the interior still reflect the original 1938 decor, preserving a piece of our rich history.
Our club's founding members were primarily men who had been wounded or ill and were repatriated from the Gallipoli campaign. Many were patients at the Caulfield Military Hospital on Kooyong Road. They gathered to support each other in the face of what they believed were unfair conditions for returning soldiers and the treatment of government dependents of men who had been killed or severely injured. The hospital helped over 20,000 men from across Australia and New Zealand, leading to a diverse membership at Caulfield RSL.
Today, our commitment remains strong as we support veterans, their families, and descendants. We actively encourage those interested in joining our volunteer team to find more information on our volunteer page.
Our club has always included our friends and allies from the New Zealand Defence Forces, many of whom settled in Melbourne after the war. In recent years, the New Zealand RSL branch has made Caulfield RSL its home, making us one of the few RSLs in Australia with such a distinction. We proudly support their members and Whānau (families), recognizing the different ways the New Zealand government addresses veteran welfare.
While our primary role is to support our members, we have also become a valuable community asset. Our facilities provide a welcoming space for locals to relax, enjoy entertainment, and socialize. Many community groups use our venue for regular meetings and seminars, and we actively support local scout groups, cadets, football clubs, and other community organizations. From 2012 to 2017, we hosted the Flying Saucer Club, bringing live music to our venue nearly every weekend.
Each year, our club commemorates ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day with fitting ceremonies. These services are often held in conjunction with the Victorian Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen & Women Australia Incorporated (VAJEX), incorporating prayers in English, Māori, and Hebrew to reflect the cultural diversity of our community.
Since its inception, Caulfield RSL has boasted over 12,000 members, including many distinguished individuals who have played significant roles in Australia's history. Our membership has included countless Australians, New Zealanders, and personnel from allied forces who have contributed as members of the Commonwealth's armed forces and modern Australian Defence Forces (ADF).
Join us at Caulfield RSL to be a part of our ongoing legacy, celebrate our rich history, and engage with a vibrant community dedicated to supporting those who have served.
